Call for new Trustees

Forest Recycling Project is moving into a new exciting period, setting a new 5 year strategy and strengthening and growing both its social and commercial operating models.

We are looking for up to three people to join our vibrant Board of Trustees, possibly including someone to chair the Board.

The Forest Recycling Project (FRP) is a charity and social enterprise in Walthamstow, turning environmental problems into social solutions for communities in East London. We reclaim materials (paint, wood and most recently textiles), re-purpose them and either donate, or sell them cheaply back to the community, to minimize waste and encourage low cost alternatives and sustainable living.

At the heart of FRP’s operations are our volunteers who come from all walks of life.  Our volunteer pathways offer developmental opportunities for vulnerable community members to learn new green skills, problem solving and build confidence towards employment.

About this opportunity

These positions offer the opportunity to play a central role in helping FRP succeed in the future. Trustees set the strategic direction or the organisation, help ensure that it is run effectively and act as ambassadors.

As well as sharing your existing skills and experience, being a trustee offers an opportunity to develop yourself in new areas whilst making a real difference in the community.

This is an exciting and challenging time for FRP. As well as running a large lottery-funded volunteering project for vulnerable adults, in addition to our ongoing paint recycling and retail business, we are actively applying for funding to support both our current work and our growth into a sustainable and influential social enterprise.

We are in particular seeking trustees who offer experience in:

  • Finance, accounting or social investment
  • Mental health and inclusiveness
  • Sustainability and Circular economy
  • Fundraising
  • Leadership and strategy skills

Current trustees represent the public, private and voluntary sectors, and some also bring local knowledge and connections within Walthamstow and neighboring areas. The Board is friendly and committed and will actively support newcomers through induction and beyond.

What we’re looking for from you

As a guide, the typical trustee commitment is 8 hours per month, with the time involved for co-chairing likely to be 12 hours per month. The Board typically holds 6 -8 meetings a year.

The key responsibility is to engage actively in these meetings to set the direction and review big decisions for the organisation. Between meetings, each trustee provides ad hoc advice and support in their area of expertise, and each is involved in supporting a particular FRP priority (for example grant funding or exploring commercial partnerships).

From you, we’ll look for commitment to FRP’s vision and aims, a willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to fulfilling the role, the ability to work effectively as a member of a team and plenty of energy and new ideas.

Next steps

To follow up your interest, please email pernille.frp@gmail.com with your CV and a short statement explaining how your skills, experience and interests match the requirements of the role.

Jo Winyard, our chair, is happy to be contacted for an informal discussion on jowinyard@gmail.com
