Introduction

Forest Recycling Project (FRP) is a 25-year old social enterprise and charity based in Walthamstow, East London. We develop innovative ways to involve communities in waste minimisation and re-use activities that deliver social and environmental benefits. Our turnover is around £175k. We have a small staff team of 5 people (all working part-time), with additional freelance and paid intern support. All our work and activities are supported by volunteers (about 100 people over the course of a year).

The Paint Place is FRP’s flagship re-use initiative. We collect surplus, leftover paint from council waste disposal sites. This paint is sorted, quality-checked, and re-mixed if need be. It is then sold & distributed as a sustainable, low-cost alternative to new paint, in particular to people on low income, community groups, charities and not-for-profits. The project aims to maximise social impact from utilising reclaimed paint as a resource.

City Bridge Trust is providing funding over 2 years (from February 2014), for FRP to enhance its volunteering programme through the Environmental Action Through Volunteering Project (the project). Building on FRP’s experience over many years of working with volunteers, the project aims to develop new approaches to get people involved with our work, maximise the benefits of volunteering, and improve the overall volunteer experience. Volunteers develop skills through activities, capture their own learning & development, and are active in the local community to increase re-use (in particular of paint) and reduce carbon emissions. The project focuses on three beneficiary groups: unemployed young adults (aged 18-30), budding (environmental) social entrepreneurs or community activists, and marginalised adults on benefits.

FRP is looking for a new Volunteering Development Manager to help us successfully shape and deliver this project, and improve our volunteering programme.

The role

We are looking for a self-starter with energy and drive to take our volunteering programme to the next level, who is fully committed to help volunteers get the most out of their volunteer experience.

  • Significantly increase volunteer numbers through recruitment and referrals, including via Job Centre Plus
  • Further develop a structured skills & learning programme
  • Identify and help realise opportunities for volunteers to develop new community activism initiatives or social enterprise activities around waste, sustainability and the environment
  • Identify progression routes for volunteers
  • Provide a mentoring & support role
  • Establish the impact of volunteering
  • Fulfil all monitoring and reporting requirements for the grant funding
