The idea is so simple, we just hire a hall for the day, invite people to bring along unwanted items and then let everyone help themselves.
We'll take anything except adult clothing or hazardous/toxic items. If you have large or heavy items, or are without transport, give us a call to arrange collection. These collections are generally done the day before the event.
If you have transport or the items are easily carried, please bring them along on the day: e.g. books, toys, kitchenware, re-useable paint, bric-a-brac, plants, furniture and ornaments etc.
In the past we've given away everything from cots and pushchairs, tables, settees and three piece suites, lamps, microwaves, hi-fi's, tv's, carpets, cupboards...in fact everything including the kitchen sink!
Why do we do it? It's good for the environment By reusing things it reduces the amount of natural resources such as oil, minerals, water, wood that we use. It also reduces the amount of waste that has to be got rid of either to landfill sites or to an incinerator.
It's good for your pocket No one is made of money and everything seems so expensive these days. So this helps save a bit of money.
How does it work? If I’m bringing things, who do I give them to? Give anything you are bringing to one of our volunteers who are all wearing badges. They will put it in the right place
What if I want to take something? If it is a small item on the tables then just help yourself - BUT don’t be greedy, please leave something for others.
If you want one of the large items of furniture, then tell the person at the check out desk the number of the item and they will arrange delivery if you need it. Large items will be delivered on the day as we don’t have any storage space.
Why don’t you take clothes? Lots of organisations collect clothes for jumbles sales etc. If you have clothes you want to pass on then take them to a local charity shop (Oxfam, Scope) or put them in your black recycling box.
Do you take electrical items? For safety reasons we can only take electrical items if we have a qualified electrical engineer on site to check the items. Please call us to see whether an engineer will be at the next Give or Take day.
What else don’t you want? We only want things that other people can use. We are NOT a waste disposal service! For information on how to dispose of genuine waste please call the Council on 020 8496 3000.
