Forest Recycling Project"RECYCLING FOR THE COMMUNITY" |
Is a viable urban waste reduction method and FRP makes a contribution with our own home made wormeries.
It is estimated that 30-35% of household waste is organic matter. In Waltham Forest this is collected in a dustcart and taken to Edmonton where it is incinerated - WHAT A WASTE! Your indoor plants, garden or vegetable plot could all benefit from your own kitchen waste and we'd save those pointless dustcart journeys across the Borough.
Most of us are familiar with the compost heap in the garden or allotment but some of us don't have the space or time to make garden compost. Worm composting is an ideal alternative for composting kitchen waste. It's a very clean process and you can keep it on your balcony or by your backdoor. You can even keep it going through the winter as long as you keep your worm bin in a mild place.
It's great fun and children love it!
What is a Wormery?A wormery, the FRP way, is a reclaimed timber box with a waterproof lid and holes for ventilation and drainage. You start the wormery with some shredded newspaper and a few vegetable kitchen scraps and just add worms. The worms used are Tiger Worms, also known as Brandlings. They are similar to normal earth worms, and you can find them at the bottom of compost heaps, or buy them from fishing tackle shops. These worms quickly eat your vegetable waste, so just keep feeding them regularly and in no time at all you'll have a box of worm compost and worms galore.
